Your online store is your storefront, sales team and customer service desk in one. When it is slow or down, you lose sales while it happens, and you may not hear about it until a customer tells you. Monitoring does not fix a store. It shortens the time between a failure and your response. Here is what it covers for an e-commerce site, and where it does not help.
Minimizing Downtime
For a store, downtime means orders you do not get. A monitor checks your pages on a schedule and alerts you when its checks fail, so you start fixing sooner. How soon depends on the check interval: Site Qwality's HTTP checks run every 5 minutes on the free plan and as often as every 30 seconds on paid uptime plans. Divide your average hourly revenue by 60 to see roughly what each minute costs, and remember that peak hours cost more.
Optimizing Page Load Speed
Speed is tied to conversion. In Portent's 2022 analysis of 20 websites (6 of them B2C e-commerce, about 100 million page views, a 30-day snapshot), e-commerce conversion averaged 3.05% at a one-second load time and 0.67% at four seconds (Portent, April 2022). That is observational data from a small number of sites, so read it as a direction, not a forecast. Monitoring shows you which pages are slow. Every Site Qwality HTTP check records DNS, TCP, TLS, time to first byte and download time separately, and real user monitoring reports Core Web Vitals from your actual visitors.
Enhancing User Experience
Uptime and speed checks tell you whether the store works. They do not tell you how shoppers move through it. Real user monitoring reports Core Web Vitals, errors and page views from real visits, and session replay records visitor sessions as DOM recordings, with privacy controls, so you can see where a shopper got stuck.
Managing Peak Traffic
Holiday seasons and promotions can send huge traffic spikes to your store. Monitoring does not stress-test your infrastructure. Load testing does, and you should run one before a big event. What monitoring does is tell you quickly when something starts failing or slowing down during the spike. For a peak period, consider a shorter check interval, and checks from more than one location (one location per monitor on the free plan, any number on paid plans, and each location counts as one check).
Tracking Third-Party Services
Many stores depend on third parties for payments, shipping rates, tax or inventory. A browser check, which runs a Playwright script in a real browser, can add an item to the cart and walk through checkout. It fails when the payment step does, whichever side the fault is on. The free plan includes 100 browser-check minutes a month. Browser checks run from one location (Virginia, on AWS).
Improving SEO Performance
Google says its ranking systems use Core Web Vitals, and also that it “always seeks to show the most relevant content, even if the page experience is sub-par” (Google Search Central, Understanding page experience). A fast, available store helps, but it does not replace good product content. For the details, see How Website Monitoring Can Boost Your SEO Rankings.
Protecting Page Content and Certificates
Monitoring is not a security product, and it does not replace patching or a web application firewall. Two parts of it help a store. Keyword monitoring alerts you when a page stops containing text it should have, or starts containing text it should never have, such as injected spam. SSL/TLS monitoring warns you before a certificate expires.
Facilitating Continuous Improvement
Recording response time on every check gives you a baseline. You can see whether a release or a new plugin made the store slower, and judge a hosting upgrade by data instead of impressions.
What Site Qwality Offers a Store
Every Site Qwality product has a free tier, and none needs a credit card. For a store, that covers HTTP uptime checks (free: 100K checks a month, every 5 minutes, one location; paid plans check every 30 seconds from any number of locations), keyword checks on product and checkout pages, browser checks for the checkout flow, SSL/TLS and domain expiry alerts, a free public status page, and alerts by email, SMS, Slack, Microsoft Teams, Discord, Telegram or webhook. Site Qwality does not run load tests. See pricing.
